Celebrate our Planet on Earth Day and Every Day

Join BusReady’s Super Green Team! Learn about sustainability, Earth Day, all of BC Transit’s efforts to take care of our planet, and the impact you can make with each bus ride you take.

There are some super activities you can do to show you’re a sustainable superhero!

Around the world, we celebrate and take care of our planet on April 22, a day we call Earth Day. It is a day we can thank our plant and remind everyone that we need to protect it from things that damage it like pollution.

Our incredible planet gives us the resources we need to grow food, build our homes, provide us with energy and so much more. Our planet is amazing, and it needs our help to keep it safe.

Imagine you have a garden you are responsible for taking care of and protecting. There are many beautiful plants, flowers, trees, animals and creatures that live in this garden. There are important things you need to do to keep the garden happy and healthy for a long time.

You’ll want to have clean water for the plants, good soil for the plants to grow in, and lots of different plants for bees, butterflies and animals. By doing all these things, you make sure the garden is in good condition and will be enjoyed for a long time.

That’s what sustainability is all about – taking care of things so they last for a long time for everyone to enjoy.

Small Actions Can Equal Big Impact

A small change like taking transit instead of using your car can help reduce air pollution, traffic, noise pollution and use less energy.

Let’s compare the transportation option of taking the bus versus taking a gas-powered car. If 40 people take the bus and 40 people take their own cars, the bus creates fewer greenhouse gases and uses less fuel. With the bus reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the air, that’s like planting a tree.

Check out what each ride over a year looks like!

1 Bus Ride a Week

6
Trees

1 Round trip bus ride per week =
155.4 kg CO2e or 6 trees planted.

2 Bus Rides a Week

12
Trees

2 Round trip bus ride per week =
310.7 kg CO2e or 12 trees planted.

5 Bus Rides a Week

30
Trees

5 Round trip bus ride per week =
776.8 kg CO2e or 30 trees planted.

10
Round-trip bus rides

With each 10 round-trip bus rides you take, it’s like planting one tree.

How is BC Transit Protecting our Province?

Electric Buses

The goal is to reduce emissions by 60% by 2040. BC Transit plans to buy 125 heavy-duty electric buses in the next three years to help get there.

Recycle and Reduce Waste

The Umo App and online schedules mean less paper is used to find your routes. BC Transit has recycling stations for all types of materials including metal, wood, and batteries.

 Alternative Fuel

BC Transit uses alternative fuels made from biological materials like vegetable oils, animal fats or waste oils. This type of fuel reduces 90% of greenhouse gases than regular fuel.
